Bring your family to the mountains

Some of my favorite memories of living here in Vermont are the slow, simple days with very little planned. When we travel as a family, we like to know that there are fun adventures nearby that we can explore when we are well-rested and ready.

When the summer season starts, there are so many swimming holes, hiking trails and farmer’s markets to visit.

If you’re looking for a getaway that builds in relaxation and adventure, we have some ideas for you.

The first thing to note is that traffic just really doesn’t exist here. So a one hour drive get you about 40-60 miles. We have an Electronic Vehicle charger on site, so EV drivers can be ready for adventures. We’re lucky to be located near some of the top attractions in Vermont.

For travelers of all ages, we suggest:

  • The ECHO Leahy Center for Lake Champlain - This science center has hands on activities for people of all ages to explore, learn and play.

  • Shelburne Farms - Explore the walking paths, visit the farm barn, enjoy a meal at the Inn, and learn about sustainability and local ecology in an exquisite setting along Lake Champlain. The 1000+ acre farm is a National Historic Landmark and offers programming and educational opportunities for all ages.

  • Ben & Jerry’s Factory - Taste some special flavors, visit the flavor graveyard, pick out some apparel and see where 350,000 pints of ice cream are made daily!

  • Shelburne Museum - Enjoy art, design and historic Americana displayed in a beautiful and interactive setting, on 45 acres near Lake Champlain. Explore a wide campus of architecture decorated to the period.

  • Waterfront Park and Burlington Bike Path - Amble along the path at the Burlington Boardwalk. Enjoy a “creemee” (what we call soft serve in VT) or swing on the benches and watch the marina. Enjoy a drink or meal at Splash on the docks. Bring your bikes and take a spin along the lake.

  • Vermont Teddy Bear Factory - Take a tour and see how the traditional bears are made. Decorate your own furry friend to bring home!

  • Lake Champlain Maritime Museum - Visit the lake with a mind to science, history and exploration. Explore new research and discoveries aboard a replica 1776 gunboat long boat. Meet archaeologists in the Conservation Lab.

  • Catamount Outdoor Family Center - Enjoy mountain biking and hiking trails for all levels!

  • Vermont Institute of Natural Science (VINS Raptor Center) - Explore outdoor exhibits with live demonstrations or raptors, song birds, and explore the Forest Canopy walk and treescape elevated play area.

  • Hike portions of the Long Trail and explore the Green Mountains - Check out some of the best hiking in the East! My favorite trails offer a great view at the end.

  • Find a swimming hole - Visit some of the best hidden swim spots in Vermont! Check the conditions and swim responsibly. Waterways change every year.

  • Visit VT Farmer’s Markets - Enjoy sites, sounds and smells! Taste some of the local flavors and support area artists.
